The Barony Needs a List Minister

Here is a brief description of the LM duties, followed by an interview with a former LM. The List Minister’s primary responsibilities are performed when the Barony has an event where a tourney is held, for example, Defender’s Tourney.

  • LM are required to enforce Kingdom and Society Laws and Policies related to list procedures, and to ensure that any fighter entered into the list is eligible to compete.
  • File a report on each individual tournament held at an event within 14 days of the event.
  • Form a working relationship with all warranted marshals within their local group.
  • Maintain contact with Kingdom List Minister, Knight Marshall and Seneschal and provide current contact information including mailing address, phone number, and email address (if available).
  • Effectively run all standard tournament forms (single and double elimination, round robin, bear pit) and be willing to learn formats with that are unfamiliar.
  • Assist the Kingdom List Minister in maintaining an accurate list of authorized fighters in the Kingdom by participating in a census, as needed, of all authorized fighters in the local group.  It is recommended that a list of local fighters be maintained by the local, LM including SCA name, membership number, membership expiration, authorized forms and authorization expiration.

INTERVIEW WITH A LIST MINISTER (not to be confused with interview with a vampire)

I spoke with Her Excellency, Baroness Amanda de Spencer, this month about her experiences in the past. Given she had a four-alarm migraine at the time we spoke, her generosity is much appreciated.

  • How long had you been a member when you decide to become List Minister? Six years.
  • In what Kingdom did you serve? Atenveldt, in the Barony of Loch Salann.
  • How did you decide to become the LM? There was an opening and I wanted to become more involved in the activities of the Barony.
  • What was your favorite activity/part of this role? I was able to be close to the fighting and see what was going on. I knew exactly what was happening and I got to be a part of the fighting without being on the field.
  • How did you get involved in the SCA? My parents took me to an event when I was 9.
  • As LM, how did you deal with someone who wasn’t authorized, wasn’t a member or some other related problem, who wanted to fight in a tournament? It never happened! Everyone was great to work with!
  • What are the paperwork and reporting responsibilities? There is a report to the Baronial Seneschal and to the Kingdom for any month that a tournament is held.
  • What did you learn? I gained organizational skills, how to work with different people, run different types of tournaments. These have all been invaluable in modern life (although bear pit isn’t common in most work setting).
  • What is your favorite color? Green.
  • What advice would you give to a new LM? Being a LM is an excellent place to start. The responsibilities are limited to only events where the Barony has a tournament, so it’s not every month or event. The Knight Marshall and Rapier Marshal help a lot in learning the job.
  • Finish this sentence: As LM, I would never ever again … Run a double elimination snowball tourney!!
  • What is your super power: I teach!

If you are interested in serving as LM please contact me and I’ll help you get additional information.

Yours in Service, Luveday de Salford, Seneschal. [email protected], 801-910-4644.
