Baronial Forum Report (Part 2) – March 2017

PART 2: Baronial Forum

There are two parts to this report. Part 1 is a summary of what was discussed at the Populace Meeting, which was posted earlier. This is Part 2, a summary of the Baronial Forum of March 16, 2017.

CHRONICLER: The deadline for the next newsletter (Questing Quill) is April 25th.

MOAS: **A deputy is needed to organize classes that will run concurrent with Fighter Practice in the summer.**

We have continued to have many great activities in our Barony.  I will be working on bringing my deputy up to speed and actively seeking an official replacement to take over in December.  I want to ensure they have time to transition into the office and work with me for at least 6 months before taking the office.

Classes for the Flower of Chivalry continue to be held during Fighter Practice at the Viridian Center on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm.

1/10 Master Elyas taught Basics of Rapier Fighting

1/17 Heraldic Devices – Basics and how to get one registered – HL Conchobhar

1/24 Basics of Heavy Fighting – Duke Timmer

1/31 Gaming – Chess (various styles), 9mens morris, Hnefatafl – Baron Aeylwin

2/7 Bardic Arts and Storytelling – Baroness Amanda

2/14 Dice Games – HL Conall and Aingeal

2/21 Embossing – Marguritte from Arrow’s Flight

2/28 Persona Graces – HL Derrick of Annesley

Guilds:

Brewer’s Guild: has been active and had guild meetings in December, January and I believe they plan to meet in March.  HE Ryryd leads the Guild in making mead and I believe they will be either racking or bottling their product.

Needleworker’s Guild: There have been multiple inquiries about remote membership in the Needleworker’s Guild.  Those choosing to be counted as remote members should plan to do the following:

.  Review the guild charter. Submit guild membership form.

.  By the 15th of each month, submit photos showing the status of your current embroidery project including its description?  To accomplish this, each participant will be given their own photo album on the guild’s face book page.

.  Show their work either each to other at events and/or in artisan displays/competitions?

.  Participate in at least one largesse project per year. This should be an item containing some level of embroidery, rather it’s a guild sponsored project or something of their own choosing. It should be donated to either the baroness or the crown. The donation should be should be documented, to ensure commitment is being met.

Largess projects:

Throne cushions: We now have the measurements for the cushions. THL Michelle has graciously donated the fabric and will sew the cushion and the drop panel. She will talk with a member of the GL guild about silk screening the design onto the panels, then one of us will take on the responsibility of additional detail work to be embroidered. The other option, if silk screening is not available, is to do applique work onto the panels. Due to the timing involved, the panels will be completed after Coronation.

Other largess projects:

Education: While we were discussing the Education program, there was renewed interest in the stitch challenge. The outline for the challenge can be found in comments on our Facebook pages and for those who do not have the book, the list of stitches, including references for tutorials will also be posted in the files section so that it is easier to find.

The members of the Guild received our new Baronial Aviary of St Frances, for their contributions to the Barony, at Defender’s Tourney.

Eisen Guild: Members created and presented a rapier sword to Master Elyas for his Master of Defense scroll which was amazing. They forged the beautiful hilt and etched the scroll wording on the blade itself.  Darn fine job.

Knight Marshall: Fighter practice continues to be held at our Winter site at Viridian Event Center, 8030 S 1825 W West Jordan, UT 84088. Four practices were held, a total of 28 heavy fighters attending. Of those, 15 were new people. Valka Lakhandottir is the new Knight Marshall.

Rapier: Five official practices were held in January. A total of 88 rapier fighters attended, with 10 new people among those. One authorization was given. ALERT: SEE UPDATE BELOW FOR FURTHER INFORMATION REGARDING FIGHTER PRACTICE IN FALL/WINTER 2017/18.

Archery: practice continues to be held from 6 to 8 every Thursday at Salt Lake Archery in Sugarhouse, 1130 Wilmington Ave. Approximately five to ten “stick flingers” have been in attendance each time.

Updates on ongoing Baronial Business:

  • ALERT: As reported last month, starting next fall (2017), we will no longer be able to reserve the Viridian Center every Tuesday for Fighter Practice as we have in the past. We will be able to have the space only one Tuesday a month. So, we will be needing a new winter Fighter Practice site. Several ideas have been submitted, however more options are needed. Please continue to give your ideas for a new location to the Knight Marshall, [email protected]. The intent is for practice to continue to be held on Tuesday evenings.
  • Concurrent with Fighter Practice, classes continue to be held that will help individuals meet the criteria for joining the Order of the Flower of Chivalry. See the Files section of the Barony of Loch Salann Facebook page for details.
  • We have successfully found a List Minister!! Her Excellency, Baroness Jennet, has stepped up to serve the Barony in this very important position. Without her, we can’t have tourney’s, so if you like tournaments thank her the next time you see her. We continue to seek a Youth Officer Deputy who will step up to the Youth Officer position, and a Youth Combat Marshall.
  • Defender’s Tournament was a great success. The weather was beautiful, Champions were recognized and classes were held. Mistress Casimira requested a special “THANK YOU” be given to Count Raven for his assistance as Quartermaster. Without his services feast … wouldn’t have been feast! Also, the fundraiser for the Musician’s Guild was very successful.
  • Thank you to the Populace for all your efforts in making Spring Coronation a success. And thank you to our Event Stewards, Baroness Sheelaegh mac Cathail and HL Aingeal inghean Garaidh!

Updates on Events and Demos in the Planning Stages:

  • Planning for Melee Madness is moving forward. Information is published in the Sage Advice, and will also be posted on the official Baronial web page, lochsalann.org. Volunteers are always appreciated.
  • Baron’s War is also in the planning stages. If you are interested in volunteering (large or small) please contact me and I’ll get you in contact with the Event Steward. More information will be posted as details are firmed up. For now, reserve Friday, August 4th through Sunday, August 6th, 2017 for camping with your SCA family. (If you want to help set up you can get on site on Thursday evening August 3rd … hint, hint.)
  • Many of you are by now are aware that the tenure of Their Excellencies on the Baronial Thrones has been extended one year, until Solstice Court 2018. VIVAT! (Or is it Huzzah?)
  • The Barony hopes to put in a bid for this year’s A&S Championship/Collegium. As always, volunteers are needed. Know of a great site? Contact me by email, [email protected].

As always, the official Baronial web page and the various unofficial FB pages are additional sources of information regarding the activities of the Barony.

Any member of the populace is welcome to attend the monthly Forum, which is held at 7 pm on the second Wednesday of the month, at Their Excellencies, 13575 S 1300 E, Draper. Next Forum will be April 12, 2017.

Yours in Service,

Luveday de Salford – Seneschal
